Suckers

Many "trees" we know aren't exactly "trees."  For example, many fruit trees need to be "trained" to grow in tree-like forms instead of as multi-stemmed bush-like growths.  Here's an example of a young tree that has put out "suckers"  -- the small stems emerging from the base -- that haven't been trimmed and will eventually grow to equal the main stem, if not cut back.
